Are You Training For a Half Marathon/Marathon, Rugby, Soccer, Netball or Similar Sport?

Here’s How You Can Increase Your Sport Specific Strength Endurance and Perform At A Higher Level for Longer On Competition Day - Week In and Week Out
Next six week block starts April 30
Our NEW sport specific bootcamp at No Compromise Fitness is based on conditioning YOUR body to suit the demands of your team sport or event.
If you are training for
- Power sports like rugby, soccer, netball, league, hockey
- Endurance events like a Half or full marathon, cycling or off road events
- Water sports like swimming, rowing, canoeing or paddling
Then you MUST do strength training to improve your ability to perform at your peak for longer and reduce injury.
Mistakes you could be making with your training right now:
- Not tapering your training to maximise peak performance – too many athletes and coaches make the mistake of not tapering strength loads that leads to over training reducing motivation and leads to injury
- Training muscles not movements – this is a typical mistake of the male athlete. Too many beach muscles like bicep curls at a time when functional movements are required
- Detraining strength reduces performance – When you stop strength training this results in a decrease of muscle fibre surface area. This in turn results in a decreased storage capacity for energy for sport specific energy demands
- Your strength repetitions are too high and not cycled to progress toward other training phases during your competitive season. Maximum strength training is ignored for power sports which reduces maximum power output.
- Speed training is not used to enhance your sport. Speed training using very light loads increases contractile speed
- You struggle with nerves during competition day
Don’t worry if you are making those mistakes above, because these issues can be rectified very easily under guidance of an experienced fitness trainer. Unfortunately for me when I was playing competitive sport in my teens I didn't get that kind of help.
I have been there myself. When I was 19 (in 2000), I was playing club rugby in Australia. My goal was to make two rep teams that year – The Riverina U/19s and New South Wales Country U/19s. I trained seven times per week – Five weight sessions and two team training sessions each week. I made the Riverina rep team easy enough, and off our team went to play in the NSW Country knockout competition. We made the final but unfortunately were beaten. The NSW Country team was named afterwards and I didn’t make it. Trust me when I say I was gutted. I had trained harder than ever only to come up short.
When I look back now I lacked knowledge in two key areas: mental toughness and sport specific strength and conditioning. The scientific approach to sports training was not well known back then, and even though it is more widely accepted as a necessary measure to achieve peak performance, many competitors do not train properly.
Our NEW Sports Lab classes will train your body to perform longer for your sport or event
- Increase core strength for your endurance event and strip minutes off your time
- Build muscle and Improve your power, speed and agility for your power sport – and leave your opponents in the dust
- Learn functional training techniques that are specific to your sport
- Turn your body into a calorie burning machine
- Find out the best food to maximise your performance on event day
- Increase your energy to perform at your peak for longer on competition day
- Learn the seven skills of mental toughness to avoid the nerves and bring out your best
- Learn how to taper your training to prevent burnout and maximise your motivation and peak performance
Here's what Rebecca had to say about our conditioning plan to boost her performance for the National Waka Ama Championships:
At the time I was training for Outrigger canoeing racing and was not happy with the gym programme that I had been given and did not feel that it was giving me the results that I wanted. I wanted a programme that would work specifically for my sport and would take it “to the next level” for my performance. I was hesitant about having a gym programme prescribed by someone who might not understand the physical needs of the sport and hence the requirements in the gym. The plan though was very thorough, very well planned and very hard!! It had taken into account all of the major racing that I had coming up and tapering appropriately for the events. Not only had the programme been tailored specifically towards my sporting needs but exercises had been developed with my sport in mind. The programme really helped with my ability to paddle at a higher level for longer. My endurance is definitely better and I went in to competitions more prepared and my body was rested appropriately as I followed the tapering plan that the programme was developed in line with. Due to my sporting background and my physical makeup, I always relied on my upper body strength to get me through things. This led to shoulder problems and recurrent injury. This programme helped me work on training and strengthening the right/weak muscles so that I was not just loading the same muscles over and over again. This has led to stronger back and shoulders, better technique and a higher capacity to do more on and off the water with my training.
How The Classes Work:
Effective sports conditioning can be a very complex when it comes to planning, but Sports Lab has found a way to make it work for you. When you arrive you will be paired up with another person who is competing at a sport that is the same or very similar to yours (and has the same energy and strength requirements). The trainer will give you a program with a science based structure to progress your body toward peak performance. You'll use free weights, medicine balls, dyna bands, water tanks and more to condition your body to perform for your sport. We'll use research based plans to formulate how much resistance training intensity you should be using at certain parts of the season.
At Sports Lab we don't teach you the technical and tactical aspects of your sport or event (like how to hit a ball or perform a butterfly swim stroke), we coach your body to become specifically stronger to perform better on competition day.
Nat Massa-Davy beat her half marathon goal time by six minutes!

Six weeks ago I started using Sportslab to increase my strength endurance to compete in the Rotorua half marathon. The sport specific training advice and nutrition plan has made a huge difference to training for my event and also race day. I cut six minutes off my goal time for my 21 km run, and finished 8th out of 186 female runners. I recommend the Sportslab class to anyone who is training for an endurance event and wants to beat their personal best!

Errol Brain, Coach Tauranga Sports Premiers 2009
In 2009 I meet with Steve and had a meeting to discuss whether he would come on board as the team’s Rugby fitness trainer. He agreed and his brief was to make the team the fittest team playing in the Bay Wide competition. We had won the competition in 2008 but I realised that the only way we were going to win again in 2009 was to increase the players’ skill level and the only way we were going to achieve this was to have the ability to do the skills required under fatigue. This was where Steve gave our team the edge over the opposition. His programming and attention to detail was very accurate and the players really enjoyed all of the sessions that he took. I have no hesitation in recommending Steve’s Rugby programs. There is no doubt that he was one of the reasons why we were so successful in 2009.
Graeme Petersen got bigger, stronger and faster for Premier Rugby
My goals were to get bigger, faster and stronger for the upcoming rugby season. The rugby training program pushed me hard, which I enjoyed. At the end of the program I am absolutely happy with the results. I feel stronger throughout my whole body and I’m also bigger and faster. I have definitely achieved the goal I set out to achieve!
Mike Sheaff completed his first triathlon in April 2012. He used Sports Lab to boost his muscular endurance that you need for long events
Hey Steve! Finished the triathlon (1000m swim, 26km mountain bike, 11km) in 3 hours 17 minutes! I had a target at the start of the day to finish inside 3 hours 30 minutes, and would have been absolutely wrapped with 3 hours 15 minutes. I am pretty happy!
