My story starts about 12 years ago when I lost a bet with a colleague…I was working at a local fitness gym in Tauranga and I had a bet with a fellow staff member as to who could build more muscle in 4 weeks. Long story short, we both started working out and got our respective nutrition programs.
But there was one thing that was holding me back….I was busy. So busy I couldn’t workout often enough. So I was eating far more food than I was burning and this lead to fat gain.
The result was that I was the laughing stock of my gym peers. Lost the bet hands down. I was feeling fat, unattractive, I was worried about how others viewed me as a trainer professionally and I was pretty pissed off with myself to be honest.
Putting my embarrassment to oneside, I moved into damage control. I went back over my research and needed to find a plan that was going to be time efficient, simple to follow and get me results quickly. 4 weeks after implementing this system I lost 5kgs…my best results ever.

Pillar 1. Nutrition – Using Intelligent Bacteria to Help You Reduce Stress, Increase Energy, Increase Satiety, Balance Moods And Burn Fat.
The “Calories in v Calories out” method of weight loss and healthy eating is out. Nutrient density is the holy grail of anti-ageing and long-term health and well being. You either get on board, or you’re out of date.
Nutrient density implies that the amount of nutrients a food has will keep you satisfied, help you sleep deeply, reduce food related inflammation and keep fat off for longer. Your bowel movements should be frequent and pass easily and therefore your weight and fat reduces each day. This is because as you feed the healthy bacteria in your gut, they multiply in numbers, help with digestion which means you use less energy on digestion, and among other things influence the food you crave!
How important are these live organisms inside us? For every one signal the brain sends to the gut, the gut sends nine signals back. The gut has such a strong influence on the brain and some scientists believe that the gut is actually more important than the brain. It also houses about 80% of our immune system.
Foods that are energy dense such as a bag of lollies, packet of chips or block of sugary chocolate are very low in nutrient density and addictive in nature and do not satisfy you at all. They keep you coming back until you eat the entire packet or feel sick! These foods also tell your intelligent “bad” gut bacteria to STORE more calories and so your weight increases quickly.
My point is this –
the food you eat either tells your body to store fat or burn it, depending on which gut bacteria is dominant.
Feed the good bacteria with nutrient dense foods and you’ll never go hungry and maintain a healthy body shape. This is because as I mentioned earlier the good bacteria will influence your healthy food craving.
Sounds easy right? Well yes, but life as you know it tends to get a bit stressful and stress actually kills the good bacteria in your gut! When we are upset, anxious, angry, busy, or overtired these feelings can cause us to crave coffee, alcohol, sugar, salt and fatty foods to “support” this ongoing stressful life. This is your built in biological response to stress. Your gut actually tells your body to eat more convenient food ready for the “famine or fight” your body perceives is about to take place.
If your body thinks there is a shortage of food it will store fat very quickly and will be extremely slow in releasing that stored fat because it needs the quick burning visceral fat on hand to keep the organs working during the “famine”.
If your body thinks you are in fight mode, your stress hormone will stimulate your liver to release sugar into the blood stream to give your big powerful muscles the energy they need to keep you safe by fighting or running away. The problem with this scenario is that if the elevated blood sugar is not burned as energy, it gets stored as fat.
These are two very common examples of how we get stubborn and uncontrollable fat gain when we live under constant pressure. This is called survival mode.
When you are in survival mode, your belly fat actually produces stress hormones that make you crave salt, sugar and fat which of course leads to more fat gain….so you can see why its important to identify and deal with the root cause of your stress to get off the dieting merry-go-round and release stubborn bodyfat.
